The Government of Maharashtra (GOM) mounted a very swift and massive relief and rescue operation. The Army, NGOs and other voluntary efforts extensively assisted GOM in the relief operations. International aid flowed freely from governments and aid organizations abroad. The effectiveness of relief efforts undertaken by GOM received commendation of all agencies involved. However, the main task now was the resettlement and rehabilitation of the affected people and, simultaneously, the preparation of a rehabilitation plan.
